“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning.” (James 1:17).

Have you ever heard someone say, “Christmas really isn’t about the gifts or presents.” I disagree with that statement! Now if they were to clarify that statement by saying, “Christmas really isn’t about the gifts or presents that are wrapped under the Christmas tree” then I would be more apt to agree with them. However, I personally believe that Christmas IS about the gifts—the gifts that God has given us from Heaven. There’s a well-known Christmas song called “The Twelve Days of Christmas” that talks about 12 different gifts that ‘my true love gave to me.’ For the next 12 days leading up to Christmas, we are going to consider the 12 Christmas gifts from Heaven that our True Love has given to us.

“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:8-11).

“This time of year never fails to excite me because God, the real gift-giver, found a way to love, bless and care for people like me. While the world has made Christmas a brazenly commercial, nonsacred event, I refuse to become cynical or allow what others do to strip My Favourite Day of its true meaning. For me, the bells I hear at Christmas announce the glorious truth that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son…From Mary and Joseph arriving in Bethlehem, to the shepherds in the fields, the angels in the heavens, and a bright star in the sky, God’s love found a way to package it all in just the right way at just the right moment…Realizing that God held back nothing, pulled out all the stops, and used the mighty resources of heaven to give the greatest gift of all ought to give us fresh reason to celebrate His birth—no matter how the world tries to twist or gloss over the truth.” (Ron Mehl, Love Found a Way).

The first and greatest gift that our Heavenly Father has given to us is the gift of His Son, Jesus. The most familiar verse in the Bible tells us, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16). When the angel first appeared to Joseph and announced the coming of Jesus, he proclaimed, “And she shall bring forth a son, and you shall call his name JESUS: for he shall save his people from their sins.” (Matthew 1:21). The gift of Jesus is the gift of salvation—everlasting life to all who will call upon the name of the Lord. “The gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” (Romans 6:23). The reason Christmas is about good tidings of great joy is that, because of Jesus, we can have peace with God and one another, through the forgiveness of sins. This Christmas Season, let our festive cry be, “Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” (2 Cor. 9:15).
