Wisdom for Daily Living #5: Sex is a Good Thing! #Proverbs

PROVERBS DAY #5: SEX IS A GOOD THING!

“Drink water from your own well — share your love only with your wife. Why spill the water of your springs in public, having sex with just anyone? You should reserve it for yourselves. Don’t share it with strangers. Let your wife be a fountain of blessing for you. Rejoice in the wife of your youth. She is a loving doe, a graceful deer. Let her breasts satisfy you always. May you always be captivated by her love. For why should you, my son, be enraptured by an immoral woman, And be embraced in the arms of a seductress?” (Prov. 5:15-20).

Does the title for today’s devotional shock you? If it does, then it is most likely because you have been affected by the negative spin that the world has put on this amazing gift from God. God created Adam and Eve, and brought them together as husband and wife: “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.” (Genesis 2:24-25).

God is not embarrassed or shocked by sex – in fact, He is the one who created it (thank you Jesus!). The very first commandment that God gave to the first married couple in the Garden of Eden was, “Be fruitful and multiply!” So the first thing we need to understand about sex is that God designed it, and that it is a good thing! However, Satan has tried to take this good thing and twist it into something sick and perverted.

God’s design is for one man and one woman to come together in a committed life-long marriage relationship. What would happen in our world if everyone began following God’s design? We would see no more prostitution, sex slave trafficking, adultery, rape, abuse, teen pregnancy and pornography. Wouldn’t our world be better if we started living by God’s design for our sexuality? God says that sex before marriage is wrong. Why? Because he knows that this sinful act lead to guilt, shame, fear and pain, and He wants to protect us from those things.

In Proverbs chapter five (above), God gives us a beautiful picture of human sexuality within the confines of a marriage relationship. When husbands and wives are meeting each others needs for love, sex and intimacy, then they will have little desire to look elsewhere to find fulfillment, and we will see less adulteries and divorces. The Apostle Paul taught this same principle in First Corinthians 7:3-5 – look it up when you get a chance.

Now remember, the Book of Proverbs is a practical book of wisdom for daily living, so let me challenge all of the married couples reading this: Be doers of the word and not hearers only!

  2. Good word Chris and always applicable to everyone. Yes I praise GOD too for creating intimacy between a husband and wife. It is a vital part in a marriage to keep alive love, unity, faithfulness, between two people.who have made vows to GOD to love, to honour and to cherish each other till death do us part. GOD takes these promises seriously and so should we, both believers and non-believers. God Bless.
