Wisdom for Daily Living #1: Life’s Instruction Book

PROVERBS DAY #1: LIFE’S INSTRUCTION BOOK

  • Join us for the next 31 days as we begin a daily devotional journey through Proverbs!

“These are the proverbs of Solomon, David’s son, king of Israel. The purpose of these proverbs is to teach people wisdom and discipline, and to help them understand wise sayings. Through these proverbs, people will receive instruction in discipline, good conduct, and doing what is right, just, and fair. These proverbs will make the simpleminded clever. They will give knowledge and purpose to young people. Let those who are wise listen to these proverbs and become even wiser. And let those who understand receive guidance by exploring the depth of meaning in these proverbs, parables, wise sayings, and riddles. Fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge. Only fools despise wisdom and discipline.” (Prov. 1:1-7).

Have you ever noticed how almost everything you buy now comes with product warnings on it? I am sure that many of these were added just so people wouldn’t sue the manufacturers when they misused their products. Some of these real product warnings are quite humorous:

  • On packaging for a Rowenta iron: Do not iron clothes on body.
  • On Nytol Sleep Aid: Warning: May cause drowsiness.
  • On a blowtorch: Not used for drying hair.
  • On a push along lawn mower: Not to be used as a hedge trimmer.
  • On a box of fireworks: Do not put in mouth.
  • On a toaster: Do not use underwater.
  • On a mattress: Do not attempt to swallow.

I’m a man, and like many men, I typically don’t like to read instruction manuals. When I pull a new toy out of its box to put it together, I will try to figure it out on my own. If I get stuck, then only as a last resort, I will consult the instruction manual. How about you? Are you the kind of person who will read the manual first, or will you wait until you’re stuck before opening it up?

Have you ever thought about how great it would be if life came with an instruction manual? Well – it does! It’s called the Bible. And of all the 66 books of the Word of God, none is more practical in its wisdom for daily living than the Book of Proverbs. If you’re looking for wisdom and knowledge to live life on planet earth, then crack open your Bible, and read through the Book of Proverbs. Here you will find wisdom on family and relationships, handling your finances, how to live a righteous life, the power of your words, the value of hard work versus laziness, keys to successful relationships, and so much more. As the introduction to Proverbs (1:1-7) above tells us, this book will teach you wisdom and discipline; it will make simpleminded people clever; it will give young people knowledge and purpose, and make wise people wiser. Remember, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Get wisdom!
