Jeremiah Devotions #3: Ask for the Old Paths
Bible Reading for Today: Jeremiah Chapters 5-8.
“Thus says the Lord: “Stand in the ways and see, And ask for the old paths, where the good way is, And walk in it; Then you will find rest for your souls. But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.” (Jeremiah 6:16).
In the Book of Jeremiah, the Lord is rebuking His people for their backsliding, for wandering away from Him and His ways. In this passage, the Lord challenges His people to stop living in their own ways, and to return to the ‘old paths’ – to walk again in obedience to His Word. When they do this, God says that their souls will be refreshed and find rest. But the sad part of the verse is the final sentence where the people respond by saying, “We will not walk in it.” That’s so sad! God is giving them a better way of living, one that will help them to experience His supernatural rest and refreshing, but they refuse.
The call to return to the old paths is a timely one for the church today. Too many preachers and teachers in the church have abandoned the teachings of the Scripture, and instead are filling peoples hearts and minds with new and novel ideas that have no root in the holy Word of God. Emergent Church proponent Rob Bell tells people that there is no hell, so it doesn’t matter how you live or whether or not you believe in Jesus. Mega Church pastor Joel Osteen appeared on Larry King Live and told people that you don’t need to believe in Jesus to go to Heaven. And that’s just the tip of the ice-burg!*
We need to see pastors, preachers and teachers start proclaiming the truth from God’s Word again, and when we do, we will see Ephesians 4:14 become a reality: “Then we will no longer be like children, forever changing our minds about what we believe because someone has told us something different or because someone has cleverly lied to us and made the lie sound like the truth.” (NLT).
Lord, I am so thankful that you have laid out for us the good way – the road that leads to blessing in our lives. You told your servant Joshua that when we meditate on your Word, and obey what’s written in it, then we will make our way prosperous and find good success (Joshua 1:8). Help us to see the value of returning to the ‘old paths’ – and walk in it. Help us to realize that when we obey your Word, we will find rest for our souls. In Jesus’ precious name, amen!*I realize that many people will be offended at me because I mentioned a couple of these false teachers by name, but I’m willing to accept that if it means at least one person turns from that false teaching and begins to believe the Bible instead!
