The Foursquare Gospel #4 – Jesus the Soon Coming King

The Foursquare Gospel #4 – Jesus the Soon Coming King:

“and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all.” (Eph. 1:19-23).

The vision of the Foursquare Gospel Church is to present Jesus Christ, God’s Son, to every person in every culture and nation as Saviour, Healer, Baptiser with the Holy Spirit, and Soon Coming King. So far, we have looked at Jesus as our Saviour, Healer and Baptiser. Today, we are going to look at what it means that Jesus is the Soon Coming King.

Jesus Christ entered the world to redeem humankind from their sinful condition. Through his death and resurrection Christ was exalted to the right hand of the Father…By humbling himself and submitting to death by being “lifted” onto a Roman cross, Christ paid for the sin of humankind, and in so doing was exalted by the Father to the highest place and given “the name that is above every name” … By the resurrection Christ’s human nature entered the glorious state of the unending life, and the risen Lord swallowed up death in victory. Having finished his work on earth, Jesus was taken back to heaven and seated at the right hand of God. This most exalted and honored position confirmed Christ’s glory and authority as the supreme ruler…The Lord Jesus is NOW a king far above any earthly ruler. At his second coming the King of kings and Lord of lords will return to earth to defeat the nations and to rule them with an iron scepter. Christ’s sovereign authority will be displayed; every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that he is Lord. (Baker’s Evangelical Dictionary of Biblical Theology).

The Bible teaches that after Jesus was resurrected from the dead and ascended to Heaven, He sat down at the right hand of God and began to rule and reign as the King of the Universe. This is contrary to the belief that some people hold that says Jesus won’t function in that role until the Second Coming. As Christians, we believe that Jesus is ruling and reigning now, and that our King will soon return to the Earth. True, there is a tension in the now-not yet aspect of the Kingdom of God. Jesus is ruling now, but it is not yet in its fullness as it will be when He returns.

This is our blessed hope, that our Great God and Saviour Jesus Christ is going to return for us and take us to Heaven to live with Him forever! What will it be like when our King returns? “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.” (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17). The King is coming back…and soon… are you ready?

“Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.” (Ephesians 2:9-11).
