The Foursquare Gospel #3 – Jesus the Baptiser with the Holy Spirit:
“He shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit, and with fire.” (Matt. 3:11).
The vision of the Foursquare Gospel Church is to present Jesus Christ, God’s Son, to every person in every culture and nation as Saviour, Healer, Baptiser with the Holy Spirit, and Soon Coming King. So far, we have looked at Jesus as our Saviour and our Healer. Today, we are going to look at what it means that Jesus is the Baptiser with the Holy Spirit.
In the above Scripture, John the Baptist declared that Jesus was coming, and that when He came, He would baptize people with the Holy Spirit, and with fire. After Christ’s resurrection from the dead, the Bible says, “And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, you have heard of me. For John truly baptized with water; but you shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence” (Acts 1:4-5). Now, what was the purpose for this baptism of the Holy Spirit? The disciples already knew Jesus as the Saviour and the Healer—what was it to mean that He would be their baptiser with the Holy Spirit? The answer is found in Acts 1:8, “But you shall receive power, when the Holy Spirit is come upon you: and you shall be witnesses unto me.” Jesus said that the purpose of the Holy Spirit Baptism was to give His disciples power and boldness to be witnesses for Him.
How do we receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit? Jesus said, “how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?” (Luke 11:13). All you have to do is ask! What will happen when the Holy Spirit comes upon you? First and foremost of course you will receive power to be a witness for the Lord Jesus. But let’s take a look at an example from the Bible of what happened on the day of Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit fell on 120 of Jesus’ disciples… “And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.” (Acts 2:4). We have every reason to believe that when we receive the Baptism of the Holy Spirit today that it will happen in the same way as it did in the Bible!
I believe that the church today needs a new and fresh outpouring of the Spirit of the Living God upon our lives and churches! For too long we’ve been content to have a form of godliness, but denied the power thereof. When Peter taught about the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, he said, “But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams.” (Acts 2:16-17). The Lord Jesus desires to baptize His church with the fire of the Holy Spirit, to put a prophetic word in our hearts, and give us dreams and visions of Him, His glory, and His kingdom!
Lord, we’re asking that you would fill us anew and afresh with the power of the Holy Spirit! We’re asking that you would baptize us with the Holy Spirit and fire, and that you would grant us a greater release of the gifts of the Holy Spirit in our midst, for your glory! Lord, let your people prophesy the word of the Lord, speak in tongues, and see a release of the power gifts of healings, working of miracles, faith, and more! Send revival to your church, Lord—times of refreshing from your presence. In Jesus’ mighty name we pray, amen!
