12 Christmas Gifts from Heaven #8 – Adoption:
“And His name will be called…Everlasting Father…” (Isaiah 9:6c).
One of my fondest memories of Christmas as a young child was spending Christmas morning with my family at my Grandma and Grandpa’s house. Early in the morning, everyone would gather together around the Christmas tree to open presents. To me, two of the indispensable elements of Christmas are family and presents. That’s what the original Christmas story was all about, too: Our Heavenly Father knows how to give good gifts. Today, we are going to behold the eighth Christmas present from Heaven—adoption.
The Bible tells us of Jesus, “But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name.” (John 1:12). When we become Christians by putting our faith in Jesus Christ and calling on His name, we are adopted into God’s family. What a wonderful gift this is! “So you should not be like cowering, fearful slaves. You should behave instead like God’s very own children, adopted into his family – calling him “Father, dear Father.” (Romans 8:15, NLT). Perhaps this is the greatest Christmas present of all! To be adopted into God’s family—what does this mean? If God is our Father—our Everlasting Father—then what do we have to be afraid of? Our Heavenly Father is a Dad who takes care of His children!
As our Heavenly Father, God is the greatest gift-giver of all. “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights.” (James 1:17). “How much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him.” (Matthew 7:11). So often when the Bible speaks of God as our Father, it also tells us that He is the one who delights to give good and perfect gifts to His children.
Every Christmas, my wife Liza and I buy good gifts for our children. Why? Because we love them and we want to bless them. What parent wouldn’t want to give good gifts to their children, if they had the power to do so? And that’s one of the greatest blessings of having God as our Father. We have already learned that He is the Wonderful Counselor, so He knows what gifts are best for us, and He is the Mighty God, so He has the power and resources to give us those gifts. What are some of the gifts that God has for His children? “Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget not all His benefits: Who forgives all your iniquities, Who heals all your diseases, Who redeems your life from destruction, Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, Who satisfies your mouth with good things, So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” (Psalm 103:2-5).
The greatest gift of all is the precious gift of salvation, the forgiveness of sins made available to us. “The gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (Romans 6:23). If you have never believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, then won’t you make room for Him in your heart this Christmas, and receive the greatest Christmas present of all? This is the eighth Christmas present from Heaven—adoption.
