The Holy Bible – It ISN’T Just Another Book

The Holy Bible – It ISN’T Just Another Book:

“But you must continue in the things which you have learned and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:14-17).

What is the Bible? It ISN’T just another book – the Bible is the Word of God. There are three important things here that the Bible says about itself that are instructive for us today:

1.         THE BIBLE IS INSPIRED BY GOD:

The Bible is not the product of the mind of man, but is the literal word of God, God-breathed, and inspired by the Almighty. “For prophecy never came by the will of man: but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.” (2 Peter 1:21). Because the Bible is inspired by God, it is the absolute rule of authority in the life of a Christian. As Charles Spurgeon declared, “If God has spoken, listen!  If God has recorded his words in a Book, search its pages with a believing heart. If you do not accept it as God’s inspired word, I cannot invite you to pay any particular attention to it; but if you regard it as the Book of God, I charge you, as I shall meet you at the judgment seat of Christ, study the Bible daily. Treat not the Eternal God with disrespect, but delight in his Word.”

2.         THE BIBLE IS PROFITABLE:

How does the Bible profit us?  In four main areas:

  • Doctrine – The Bible contains all the truth necessary for life and godliness: it teaches us about who God is, what He is like, what He has promised to do for us, and what He has commanded us to do for Him.
  • Reproof – The Bible rebukes us for wrong behaviour or beliefs, and exposes our sin so that we can deal with it through confession and repentance.
  • Correction – The Bible restores us to a right relationship with God, helping us get back up when we have stumbled and fallen, pointing the way back to godly living.
  • Instruction in Righteousness – The Bible provides positive training in godly behaviour.

Some of you might ask – how do these four things profit us? The Bible says that when we profit from the doctrine, reproof, correction and instruction of the Word of God, that two things will happen. First of all, we will be complete or perfect, conformed to the image of Jesus. And secondly, we will be thoroughly equipped for every good work, ready to serve God.

3.         THE BIBLE WILL MAKE YOU WISE TO SALVATION:

How does that happen? Romans 10 says, “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard?…So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (v. 13,14a,17). Although reading or hearing the Word of God itself will not save you, it is a pre-requisite to believing in Jesus. If you don’t hear about Jesus, you won’t believe in Jesus, and only those who trust Jesus and call on His name will be saved. So today I want to challenge you to read your Bible – it ISN’T just another book. The Bible is inspired by God, it is profitable, and it will make you wise to salvation. Read it to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be holy.
