Superheroes of Faith:
“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:6).
When I was a little child, one of my dreams was to grow up and be a superhero. I remember running around the house wearing a cape in a Superman or Batman costume, pretending to have superpowers to defeat the forces of evil. I loved to read comic books (still do!), and delighted in the stories of these colourful heroes battling evil villains who were trying to take over the world. Everybody loves a hero. But there’s one problem with comic-book heroes – they’re not real. Wouldn’t it be great if we had real superhero role models that we could look up to and aspire to be like? The good news is, we do.
There’s a chapter in the Bible (Hebrews 11) which is commonly referred to as the “Hall of Faith” and it chronicles the lives of the great heroes of the Bible from Abel to Samuel. But these heroes aren’t your average, run-of-the-mill heroes – these are real-life, honest to goodness superheroes – superheroes of faith! A hero is defined as someone who watches over and protects other people, someone admired for courage, nobility or exploits. This is an apt description of the superheroes of faith described in Hebrews chapter 11. Here’s just a brief look at some of the things that they accomplished for the Lord:
These superheroes, “through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.” (Hebrews 11:33-34).
Do you want to be a superhero of faith? You don’t have to be an extraordinary person – just an ordinary person who trusts an extraordinary God. A superhero of faith is someone who walks by faith, believing that God exists, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. The people who know their God shall be strong, and carry out great exploits (Dan. 11:32). Take the time today to read through Hebrews 11, and be inspired by the example of the superheroes of faith in the Bible.
Once you’ve been inspired by what God did in the past through these great men and women of God – believe that God wants to use you to do something great for Him today. You can be a superhero of faith…if you only believe. Love people. Do good. Be kind to people. Reach out to people who are lonely and hurting. Help people. You can be a hero!
“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” (Hebrews 12:1-2).
