The Holy Spirit #2 – His Ministries:
“Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away.” (John 16:7a).
For thirty three and a half years, Jesus – God the Son – walked on the Earth among people. He healed the sick, raised the dead, cast out devils, forgave the sinners, gave hope to the hopeless and helped the helpless. Then, as Jesus was getting ready to go to the Cross, and return to God the Father in Heaven, He made the most unusual statement. He said, “It is to your advantage that I go away.” What was He talking about? Jesus had come into the world as a light in a dark place, healing the broken hearted, comforting those who were mourning, and setting at liberty those who were in bondage to sin and Satan. How could it be to our advantage that Jesus would leave us? Well, let’s look at the context of Jesus’ words here and see if we can figure it out:
“Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.” (John 16:7). Ah – now it makes sense. Jesus was saying, “Even though I’m going back to Heaven, and you’re going to miss me, don’t worry, because I’m going to send ANOTHER Comforter – the Holy Spirit – who will be with you forever.” What a wonderful gift that Jesus has given to us! Today, let’s look at some of the wonderful ministries of the Holy Spirit.
1. THE HOLY SPIRIT COMFORTS US:
Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” (John 14:27). Peace and comfort is the fruit of the Holy Spirit in the life of a Christian. No matter what kind of trouble is happening in the world, the Christian can have peace of mind because of the comfort the Holy Spirit gives to us. And don’t forget the wonderful promise in Romans 8:16, “For his Holy Spirit speaks to us deep in our hearts and tells us that we are God’s children.” THIS is comfort.
2. THE HOLY SPIRIT TEACHES US AND GUIDES US:
Not only is the Holy Spirit our comforter, He is also our teacher and guide. Jesus said, “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth” (John 16:13). Thank God that Jesus didn’t leave us alone when He returned to Heaven, but He sent us the Holy Spirit to lead us and guide us. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Truth. God’s Word is Truth. The Holy Spirit will help us to understand God’s Word. When you read your Bible, pray for the Holy Spirit to give you wisdom and understanding, and you will begin to understand God’s Word in a way you never have before.
3. THE HOLY SPIRIT HELPS US PRAY:
“Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.” (Romans 8:26). Sometimes when we’re praying, we don’t know what to say or how to pray. The Holy Spirit helps us by making intercession for us. So the next time you’re praying, and you don’t know what to say, pray, “Holy Spirit, give me the words to say. Show me how to pray.” He will help you every time.
The Holy Spirit is our Comforter. He is our Teacher, our Guide, and our Helper. But the Holy Spirit is so much more. He is the One who draws us to Jesus, and shows us our need for a Saviour. He convicts us of our sin. He makes us holy. He empowers us in our service of God. Let us thank Jesus today for asking the Father to send us the wonderful gift He has given us in the Holy Spirit. “God the Father chose you long ago, and the Spirit has made you holy. As a result, you have obeyed Jesus Christ and are cleansed by his blood. May you have more and more of God’s special favor and wonderful peace.” (1 Peter 1:2).
