How do we Keep From Being Deceived?:
“But I fear that somehow you will be led away from your pure and simple devotion to Christ, just as Eve was deceived by the serpent. You seem to believe whatever anyone tells you, even if they preach about a different Jesus than the one we preach, or a different Spirit than the one you received, or a different kind of gospel than the one you believed.” (2 Corinthians 11:3-4).
“Don’t let anyone lead you astray with empty philosophy and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the evil powers of this world, and not from Christ.” (Col. 2:8).
There are so many different religions and denominations in the world today. How do we know which one is right? How do we keep from being led astray? The Bible says, “According to some people, there are many so-called gods and many lords, both in heaven and on earth. But we know that there is only one God, the Father, who created everything, and we exist for him. And there is only one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom God made everything and through whom we have been given life.” (1 Corinthians 8:5-6). Jesus Himself said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6).
The Bible – which is the inspired, infallible Word of God – declares that there is only one God, the Father, who created everything. It also says that there is only one way to Heaven, and that is through His Son Jesus Christ. The reason I brought up this topic is because I have seen many people who have been deceived by false religions because they didn’t know the truth about the Bible. This is more than just a lesson in philosophy or religion. I share this with you because I don’t want to see YOU get deceived. The false teachings of Buddha, Mohammed, Mormonism, the Jehovah’s Witnesses – and every other sort of doctrine of devils – will damn your soul to hell, if you will let it. There’s only one way to Heaven – through Jesus. That’s why the Bible warns us not to let anyone lead us astray. How do we keep from being deceived? The answer to that question can be found in a story in the book of Acts.
“Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. Therefore many of them believed.” (Acts 17:10-12).
The Bereans are a great example for us in how we can keep from being deceived. When they listened to God’s Word being preached, they received the Word with all readiness (it’s good to receive God’s Word with an open heart). But it also says that they searched the Scriptures daily to find out if what Paul and Silas were saying was true. As a result of this, many of them put their faith in Jesus Christ, and were saved from their sins. If more people would read their Bibles for themselves, I believe we would have less people being led astray by false teachings. God’s Word is the only source of ultimate truth – it reveals to us the only way to Heaven, and that is through faith in Jesus Christ. There is no other way. “You can enter God’s Kingdom only through the narrow gate. The highway to hell is broad, and its gate is wide for the many who choose the easy way. But the gateway to life is small, and the road is narrow, and only a few ever find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14). Search the Scriptures – read your Bibles – and find the free gift of salvation in Jesus Christ that God the Father freely offers to all who will believe.
