What Do You Burn For?

What do you burn for?

For the past couple of years, I have taken teams on mission trips to Costa Rica. (My wife Liza is leading the team this summer). Every team member raised their own money to participate, and when we got to Costa Rica, we worked hard in the hot humid weather.

This past year, we went door to door in poor communities handing food out to people, cleaned up garbage in the neighbourhood, held children’s ministry outreaches, and participated in church services. We visited a rehab center and blessed the men there with gifts of food and toiletries such as toothbrushes and toothpaste. We cleaned and painted a new building for a growing church.

Many people have asked us why we would leave our comfortable homes in Canada to travel to a third world country to work for a week. The answer is simple – Jesus has called us to go, and we must go!

Missionary Jim Elliot said, “That man is no fool who gives what he cannot keep, to gain what he cannot lose.” That reminds me of the words of Jesus who said, “For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.”

When Joan of Arc was dying at the stake, she said, “Every man gives his life for what he believes. Sometimes people believe in little or nothing, but they give their lives for that little or nothing.” What do you burn for? Who or what are you living your life for? Live for Jesus!
