Choose Life!

“A wise son makes a glad father,

But a foolish son is the grief of his mother.

Treasures of wickedness profit nothing,

But righteousness delivers from death.

The Lord will not allow the righteous soul to famish,

But He casts away the desire of the wicked.

He who has a slack hand becomes poor,

But the hand of the diligent makes rich.

He who gathers in summer is a wise son;

He who sleeps in harvest is a son who causes shame.” (Prov. 10:1-5).

One of the teaching tools that Solomon uses over and over in the Proverbs is contrasting, like we see in the above verses. He contrasts here:

  • wisdom and foolishness
  • righteousness and wickedness;
  • diligence and laziness

Every day we have a choice between these two options – one choice leads to blessing, and one choice leads to cursing.

As a father, I want to help my children to grow up to be able to live and enjoy life to the fullest – full of the joy, peace and hope that their Heavenly Father has intended for them. In order to do this, I need to train my children, and teach them the difference between right and wrong. I also need to discipline them, to correct them when they make wrong choices, to help them to learn that there are consequences for their actions. So, when my children do their chores or act in a kind manner towards one another, I may reward them with a tangible blessing – such as an allowance or some other special treat. When my children are disrespectful or disobedient, I may punish them by grounding them from something they enjoy. The goal is that they will learn that God blesses wisdom, obedience and righteousness, and He does not bless foolishness, rebellion or wickedness. If they learn these lessons, I have done part of my job as a parent.

Whether you are a parent or not, we all have the choice to make every day between wisdom and foolishness, righteousness and wickedness, and diligence and laziness. May these words challenge you to choose life:

“I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore CHOOSE LIFE, that both you and your descendants may live; that you may love the Lord your God, that you may obey His voice, and that you may cling to Him, for He is your life and the length of your days; and that you may dwell in the land which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, to give them.” (Deut. 30:19-20).

What will you choose?

One Response to Choose Life!

  1. Very true. We all have a choice to make – one of blessing, life, and wisdom – or – one of foolishness.

    Thanks for the post.
