Six, No, Seven Things the Lord Hates

“These six things the Lord hates, Yes, seven are an abomination to Him: A proud look, A lying tongue, Hands that shed innocent blood, A heart that devises wicked plans, Feet that are swift in running to evil, A false witness who speaks lies, And one who sows discord among brethren.” (Prov. 6:16-19).

Do you love the Lord? Jesus said, “If you love Me, keep My commandments.” (John 14:15). As Christians, I believe we should love the things that God loves, and hate the things that He hates. In the above Scripture, we learn about seven things that the Lord hates. Let’s briefly look at them one by one, and then – by His grace – commit to walk free from them in our lives.

1.     A Proud Look:

James 4:6 tells us, “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” A proud person won’t seek the Lord but will try to do things on his own. A humble person will admit that we need the Lord, and seek His wisdom in our lives.

2.     A Lying Tongue:

One of the reasons why God hates lying so much is because He is Truth, and therefore, lying is completely opposed to His very nature. Jesus also said that the devil is the father of lies, so when we lie, we are acting like Satan.

3.     Hands that Shed Innocent Blood:

Why does the Lord hate murder? Because all human life is valuable because we have been created in God’s image. This is why God hates abortion.

4.     A Heart that Devises Wicked Plans:

It’s hard to believe that there are people in the world who just sit around thinking up new and terrible things to do to other people. God hates this.

5.     Feet that are Swift in Running to Evil:

Some people are so anxious to do bad things, that they run to do it, and will do it every chance they get.

6.     A False Witness who Speaks Lies:

This is the second time in this one list that God mentions how much He hates lying. I think He’s trying to tell us something here!

7.     One Who Sows Discord Among Brethren:

“Behold, how good and how pleasant it is For brethren to dwell together in unity! For there the Lord commanded the blessing.” (Ps. 133). God hates those who gossip or stir up strife, because it hinders His blessing from flowing.

Lord, help us to use our eyes, mouth, heart, hands and feet to serve you!
